Take 5 with Tash: Finding Mental Health Support & Emotional Wellness Tips (with a Chunk of Chocolate!)
At Pebbly Path, we’re not just passionate about making premium handcrafted chocolate like our unique rocky road—we’re also committed to supporting mental health. As part of our mission, we donate a percentage of profits to the LIVIN mental health organisation, but on a personal level, I (Tash) have a deep passion for emotional wellness and mental health education.
Having been through therapy since I was 12, I’ve picked up a few nuggets of wisdom along the way. With today’s challenges in accessing mental health support, I thought you might appreciate a few tips and tricks to help when life feels as unpredictable as a batch of chocolate rocky road. 🍫
Each fortnight, I’ll be sharing "Take 5 with Tash" to offer some mental health insights. So, grab a cuppa and a chunk of Pebbly Path’s rocky road chocolate, and let’s get started!
3 Tips for Finding the Right Therapist
-
Connection is Key
Just like finding your favorite chocolate flavor, the most important part of finding a therapist is the connection. You’ll know when you click with them—it’s an instant feeling. And just like how not every rocky road is for everyone, not every therapist will be the right fit. -
Telehealth is an Option
With long wait times, telehealth therapy can be a lifesaver. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I was skeptical about online therapy, but much like how the first bite of a new chocolate bar can surprise you, I found a deep connection with my therapist via Zoom. Don’t hesitate to give it a go—you’ve got nothing to lose. -
Mental Health Plans for Affordable Therapy
Cost is often a barrier for getting help, but in NSW, you can get a referral from your GP for a mental health plan, which gives you 10 subsidized psychology appointments. Think of it like a sweet deal on your favorite chocolate gifts—it makes getting the help you need much more accessible.

1 Gold Nugget for Emotional Regulation
Now, here’s a sweet mental health tip that has been a game-changer for me: Name it to tame it. This technique helps you separate yourself from overwhelming emotions, much like savoring a piece of chocolate can help you slow down and enjoy the moment. When you feel yourself spiraling with negative emotions, here’s what to do:
- First, recognize the emotion you’re feeling. Don’t resist it, just notice it—kind of like noticing the different flavors in a piece of artisan chocolate.
- Take a deep breath in, and slowly exhale, just like taking the time to savor a bite of rocky road.
- As you breathe, start naming the emotion: “angry… angry… angry” or “sad… sad… sad.” Just like identifying the ingredients in a complex chocolate treat, you’ll begin to gain clarity.
- Keep deep breathing and naming your feelings, and you’ll notice your body starting to relax—much like the comfort that comes from indulging in your favorite chocolate confection.
Give this technique a try this week and let me know how it works for you! Just like the best chocolate desserts, emotional regulation takes a little time, but the results are worth it.
